Ecosource's Cultivating Green Champions program is designed for youth aged 15-30. It aims to connect young people with nature through immersive, hands-on experiences and empower them to build a sustainable and equitable community. Participants will have the opportunity to develop environmental knowledge, leadership skills, and gain insights into Indigenous teachings, history, and cultural practices related to the land.
This program includes educational workshops and stewardship opportunities focused on expanding environmental technical skills, such as sustainable urban agriculture, measuring water quality, and identifying native and invasive plant species. Indigenous teachings will also be integrated into the program to introduce participants to Indigenous ways of knowing, including the significance of plants.
Participants will engage in two one-week immersive learning experiences, applying the knowledge gained during the program. These experiences will involve hands-on reconciliation, restoration, and naturalization activities at select sites in the Region of Peel and Haldimand County. Activities may include knowledge sharing, native planting, and community gardening.
Upon completion of each one-week session, participants will receive a leadership certificate and a letter of recommendation. The program offers flexibility to accommodate participants' work or other commitments.
The program will be conducted virtually and in-person, following COVID-19 health and safety protocols. Transportation to and from in-person locations will be provided or subsidized. The program will run until March 2024, with most learning opportunities occurring from June to December. Location: Mississauga, Caledon, Virtual
